NEW YORK, 21 December (Department of Economic and Social Affairs) -- The
United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 as the International Year
of Cooperatives, highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to
socio-economic development. In adopting resolution 64/136 on 18 December,
the Assembly noted that cooperatives impact poverty reduction, employment
generation and social integration.

After a nationwide search, Austin City Manager Marc Ott has selected Robert Gedert, a recognized national leader in solid waste management research, analysis and planning, to lead the City of Austin’s Solid Waste Services Department.

Gedert, a former Source Reduction and Recycling Branch Chief for the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, was most recently the Executive Director for the California Resource Recovery Association.

Best Buy electronics recycling program launches Feb. 15 in all U.S. stores

MINNEAPOLIS, January 23 – Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY) will bring its electronics recycling program Feb. 15, 2009 to all of its 1,006 stores nationwide. The program will expand sometime in fiscal 2010 to Puerto Rico stores. The program is the latest addition to the comprehensive programs offered by Best Buy to help consumers find easy ways to recycle, reuse, or trade in products at the end of their life.

On July 30th, the Solid Waste Services Department and Public Works Department co-hosted an interactive public input meeting to gather the community’s thoughts on the scope of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Master Plan.
