Progress at Circle Acres!

Ecology Action has made great progress out at Circle Acres thanks to the Americorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC)! EA hosted 11 young people from the NCCC program for two weeks of environmental education and hands-on park building.

First, we started by removing bamboo and cleaning up trash that is screening illegal dump sites...

Journal Entry of an Amateur Landfill Ecologist #1

In 2009, Ecology Action became the steward of a 10-acre tract of land in the Montopolis neighborhood of East Austin. Until the late 1980’s, it was The Grove Municipal Landfill and a rock and sand quarry previous to that. It had been clear cut, stripped of its topsoil, dug out and then backfilled with all manner of household and industrial waste. Whatever it resembled in that "pristine" moment when it was in natural balance and entirely untouched by corrupting human hands, it would never look that way again. Or would it?

Update on the current COA Recyling Contracts

Some results are in from the first two months of the curbside recycling contract that the City of Austin approved in April of 2011. According to a Statesman article on Sunday, "In October and November, the first two months of 20-year recycling deals, the city paid Balcones Resources $83,548 to process 5,387 tons of recyclables and paid Texas Disposal Systems $135,733 to process just 3,669 tons."

Ecology Action is now accepting used electronics!

We now recycle any and all used electronics! Want to know if your item is classified as a recyclable used elctronic? Ask yourself these three questions to see if Ecology Action can accept it:

  • Does it plug in?
  • Does it have a circuit board?
  • Is it not an appliance?

If you can answer yes to all three questions, we can recycle it. Drop it off in the big brown bin now located in the front of the lot right next to the glass area.
